Meeting Chess Legend GM David Navara at the 2022 Chess Olympiad
My Memorable Encounter with GM David Navara at the 2022 Chess Olympiad

A Dream Come True in Chennai
The 2022 Chess Olympiad in Mahabalipuram, Chennai, was a whirlwind of excitement for me, a Candidate Master from India. Among the many unforgettable moments, one stands out above the rest: meeting Grandmaster David Navara and many other top chess players in person. Not only did I have the privilege of sharing the board with him online, but I also captured a cherished photo with this chess legend, a memory I’ll treasure forever.
Our Lichess Battles

David and I had crossed paths before, not over a physical board, but in the virtual world of Lichess.org. We played a few thrilling games on Wings Gambit, one of which was particularly memorable—a fierce battle in the Wing Gambit. I was tantalizingly close to securing a draw, but David’s Grandmaster brilliance shone through. Under time pressure, he outmaneuvered me, leaving me both frustrated and in awe of his skill. That game was a masterclass in precision and composure, and it only deepened my respect for him.

A Warm Encounter at the Olympiad
The highlight of my Olympiad experience was meeting David in person in Chennai. Nervously, I brought up our Lichess games, half-expecting him to have forgotten. To my astonishment, he remembered! For a few minutes, we chatted about those online battles, and his warmth and humility made it feel like I was talking to an old friend rather than a world-renowned Grandmaster. His genuine kindness left a lasting impression on me.

More Than a Chess Master
David Navara isn’t just an exceptional chess player; he’s a truly remarkable human being. His kindness and humility reminded me of something Gukesh’s mother recently said: “Becoming a great player is wonderful, but being a good human is what truly matters.” David embodies this philosophy perfectly, and meeting him was a powerful reminder of the values that make chess such a beautiful community.
Inspiration to Keep Pushing Forward
This encounter with David Navara has fueled my passion for chess even more. I’m grateful for the memory, the photo, and the inspiration to keep going the game I love . Moments like these remind me why I fell in love with chess in the first place—the thrill of the game and the chance to connect with incredible people like David.
Here’s to more battles, both online and over the board, and to chasing my dreams in the world of chess!
